Sikanda is the name given by Eros Riccio to his book of chess openings, which led him to compete at the highest levels in the world of Freestyle Chess Tournament. After becoming Champion 8th PAL / CSS Freestyle Tournament (2008), the most prestigious tournament in the world of Freestyle Chess, sponsored by the PAL Group in Abu Dhabi, with Sikanda and his personal own strategic ability, Eros has won all five world Freestyle Chess tournament that have occurred in two years, becoming the number one in the world of Freestyle. Sikanda, named after the magical sword of the Neverending Story by Michael Ende, is a very special chess openings book, built by Eros manually, day by day, piece by piece, in over ten years, and has become her magic and deadly weapon, before which had to bow not only the strongest chess players in the world of Freestyle, but also the cluster of the Rybka team, a scary monster made up of 55 computers that work well as a single powerful computer and that seemed unbeatable, and finally also Highendman, the Russian team of leading specialists of chess engines.

LUCCA. Nella Finale del settimo Campionato Europeo a Squadre di scacchi per corrispondenza, iniziato nel 2009 e terminato in questi giorni, la Nazionale Italiana Asigc, guidata in prima scacchiera dal lucchese Eros Riccio, si è classificata al secondo posto assoluto, a solo mezzo punto dalla nazionale della Slovacchia che ha vinto il torneo, ed ha quindi conquistato la medaglia d’argento. Si tratta del massimo traguardo mai raggiunto da una nazionale italiana di scacchi. Nella classifica finale, la Germania e la Russia, che sembravano le squadre da battere, si sono dovute accontentare del sesto e del settimo posto. Buona la prestazione di Israele (4 posto), mentre hanno fortemente deluso gli inglesi, solo dodicesimi, e gli spagnoli (13° posto); ultimo posto per l’Ucraina. In prima scacchiera, il Grande Maestro Internazionale di scacchi per corrispondenza, Eros Riccio, pur affrontando i più forti giocatori d’Europa delle altre nazionali, ha ottenuto il primo posto in classifica col risultato di 8,5 punti su 14, riportando 4 vittorie, 9 pareggi ed una sola sconfitta. In seconda scacchiera, il GM Claudio Cesetti ha fatto addirittura meglio, chiudendo anch’egli al primo posto con ben 9 punti su 14 (4 vittorie, 10 pareggi e nessuna sconfitta). Ottime le prestazioni ed il piazzamento anche degli altri componenti della nazionale italiana: Vincenzo Dell’Isola, infatti, ha ottenuto un buon 4° posto in terza scacchiera, Giuseppe Pezzica un importante 3° posto in quarta scacchiera, Pierangelo Turati il settimo in quinta scacchiera e Mauro Petrolo un ottimo secondo posto in sesta scacchiera. Non brillanti, purtroppo, le prestazioni di Mauro Versili, solo 13° in settima scacchiera, e di Salvatore Montella, 14° in ottava scacchiera. Congratulations to SM Eros Riccio who made it in the 4th FICGS correspondence chess championship, beating FICGS WCH Edward Kotlyanskiy 6.5-5.5

As he already won the candidates final match in the 5th FICGS chess WCH, we'll have the next final match "Eros Riccio vs. Eros Riccio" .. just joking, means that Eros just won the 5th FICGS championship as well... 2 titles at once, an amazing performance!

Sure that we'll need veeeery strong players to try to move the new FICGS king (who also won 2 FICGS freestyle cups) in the next WCH cycles!

Congrats also to Edward who was really near in this match, maybe the players will explain what happened in the only game that didn't finish into a draw... Finally many thanks to both players for a nice show!

Eros Riccio vince il 4° Campionato mondiale di scacchi per Corrispondenza, organizzato dalla FICGS, battendo in finale il campione in carica, lamericano Edward Kotlyanskiy.

Dopo aver superato brillantemente le fasi preliminari e la semifinale, il lucchese Eros Riccio ha affrontato in dodici partite, come prevede il regolamento della FICGS per la finalissima, il forte campione uscente Kotlyanskiy, battendolo col punteggio di 6,5 a 5,5.

Lo scontro è stato assai duro e interessante e pieno di suspence fino alla fine, come è normale in così alti livelli, tanto che delle 12 partite disputate ben 11 sono finite in pareggio e solo nella dodicesima partita Riccio è riuscito a sconfiggere lavversario e ad accaparrarsi la vittoria finale.

In una delle interviste nei forum scacchistici internazionali più importanti, è Eros in persona a spiegare il suo straordinario momento. Devo ammettere dice Eros, rispondendo ad una domanda dello scacchista francese Thibault De Vassal, patron della FICGS, - che questo è davvero un periodo magico per me. Dopo aver ottenuto di recente il titolo di Grande Maestro Internazionale ICCF di scacchi per corrispondenza ed essere primo in classifica e quindi favorito per il mio terzo titolo di campione italiano di scacchi per corrispondenza su tre partecipazioni, ecco questa enorme soddisfazione di essere diventato campione FICGS. Non vedo lora di sfidare il prossimo pretendente, ma ora lasciatemi godere il titolo per un po di tempo.

Nel dicembre del 2010 Eros ha vinto anche la terza Ficgs Ches Freestyle Cup.

Eros Riccio kindly accepted to answer a few questions on his win in the 4th FICGS chess WCH, and explained how one particular game influenced another one that he finally won:

- Hi Eros, first of all congratulations for your latest outstanding results at FICGS, you won the Freestyle tournament, now two chess championships in a row... When the privilege of the champion is to defend his title without playing the preliminary tournaments, you are involved in all championship cycles & a few regular tournaments, do you plan to avoid that anyone can even reach the championship final in the future?

Thanks! I must admit that this is really a magic moment for me in chess... if you consider that despite my recent ICCF Grand Master Title, probably I will also soon win my third italian Correspondence Champion Title out of three participations in the Italian Final Tournaments. And now also this huge satisfaction of being the FICGS Champion! I look forward to seeing a new challenger soon, I wonder who he will be, but let me enjoy the next few months for now

- What are your impressions on the games? Did you have any strategy from the beginning to the end? Finally did it work or was there another factor? (without revealing your secrets, of course )

The games in the opening were as I expected, all Najdorf Sicilians except one game where I played 1.d4. My goal was to win at least one game, so I tried different aggressive variations as White (6.Bg5, 6.f3, 6.Be3 and 6.h3) with the hope of catching Edward unprepared on at least one of these, but uff, he was very well prepared on each one of them! A curious thing is that my biggest chance of winning happened in a game where I had the Black pieces! So Edward had to take some risks in one of his games where he had Black (the games where he had White were already finished or all very drawish) he was forced to avoid an easy draw he had (the 6.h3 game) and eventually he lost that game. Happy of having reached my goal of winning at least one game, I accepted his draw offer in that other game (6.f3 e5 7.Nb3 Be6 8.Be3 Be7 9.Be2) where I had good winning chances.

- You probably noticed, like many correspondence chess players, that the hardware still fastly improves while chess engines are continuously getting stronger, particularly since that "supposed" clones of Rybka (some may be even stronger than Rybka herself) appeared in the race. Do you think that the rate of draws will be so high soon that it may definitely kill correspondence chess? Do you have any opinion on these new engines?

I think that despite the big improvement of Hardwares and engines, we are still very far (and we will still be in the next 5 years, hopefully) from a situation where all the games will most probably end in a draw. So I think we can enjoy correspondence chess for many more years in the future, even if of course the Draw percentage at the highest levels will be higher and higher.

- I remember that you were surprised to win your match against Alberto in the Candidates Final of the 5th cycle (the reason why you do not even have to defend your title this time), the WCH rules (particularly the co-existence of the round-robin tournament & knockout tournament) are obviously not well understood by all players, what do you think about this system and the tie in 8 games matches? Are there changes you'd like to see in the future?

Yes, I really was! We were both convinced that with all draws, the higher rated player would have won (Alberto was higher rated than me in that match). Anyway it was our fault, as we didn't read the rules carefully. I am not sure what changes could be done in the future... maybe this is anyway the best setup, no new ideas are coming to my mind right now.

- Do you have a few more words for Edward after these nice games? Maybe also for your future opponents?

It was a real pleasure for me to play him, not only for the interesting games we played, but also for the friendly chats we had during the exchanges of the moves. I hope to play him again in the future for a rematch.

It is very interesting to see that a even a player like Eros prefered to minimize the risks (avoiding mouse drops or whatever) as much as possible by accepting a draw in a game where he had winning chances. Correspondence chess is definitely not all about chess, that's probably the lesson.

Also it is reassuring to read that correspondence chess is NOT dead yet, nor soon

che conquista il titolo ICCF di Grande Maestro Internazionale di scacchi

Il lucchese Eros Riccio, prima scacchiera della nazionale italiana impegnata nel Settimo Campionato Europeo a Squadre, vince lultima partita del torneo e conquista il titolo ICCF di Grande Maestro Internazionale di scacchi.

Battendo il GM ceco Jiri Voahlík, Riccio raggiunge quota 8,5 punti in 14 partite, agguanta il primo posto nella classifica dellimportante torneo europeo e ottiene la sua terza e definitiva Norma di Grande Maestro e quindi il massimo titolo dellICCF.

Lo scacchista lucchese aveva conquistato la sua prima Norma di GM nel 2008 guidando la squadra italiana Blue Team nella Champions League A, a conclusione della quale aveva ottenuto il risultato di 6,5 punti in 10 partite e si era classificato al secondo posto a mezzo punto dal GM tedesco Arno Nickel.

La seconda norma di Grande Maestro era arrivata lanno scorso, sempre alla guida in prima scacchiera della nazionale italiana, nel torneo internazionale Mare Nostrum, col prestigioso risultato di 7 punti in 8 partite (6 vittorie e 2 pareggi) ed il primo posto in classifica.

Eros Riccio conquista la seconda Norma ICCF di Grande Maestro

Nel torneo internazionale “Mare Nostrum”, Eros Riccio vince anche col croato Vladimir Cvetnic, raggiunge il primo posto nella classifica delle prime scacchiere e conquista la sua seconda Norma ICCF di Grande Maestro di scacchi.
Altra grande soddisfazione per il campione lucchese che, alla guida della compagine azzurra, ha già realizzato ben 6 punti su 7, vincendo 5 partite, pareggiandone due e non subendo alcuna sconfitta.
Riccio, che deve ancora concludere un incontro, ma non è più raggiungibile dai suoi avversari alla testa della classifica, ha battuto lo spagnolo Armand Reig Pinol, il francese Patrice Donnenfeld, l’israeliano Michael Elent, il turco Tolga Goze e adesso anche il croato Vladimir Cvetnic; ha invece pareggiato contro i due maestri internazionali, il francese Laurent Tinture e lo slovacco Leon Krajnc.
Per ottenere dall’ICCF il titolo definitivo di Grande Maestro di scacchi, Eros Riccio deve conquistare una terza Norma ma, visti i suoi risultati a livello internazionale, non dovrebbe tardare molto ad ottenerla.
